A Legacy Built on Service:

The Story of Wohlfeil Hardware & Tools

For nearly eight decades, Wohlfeil Hardware & Tools has been more than just a hardware store — it has been a family legacy rooted in hard work, community values, and trusted service throughout the Saginaw area. What began as a small engine repair shop in the late 1940s has grown into a multi-generational family business that continues serving customers with the same dedication and hometown care it was founded on.

The story began in 1947 when Ervin “Pat” Wohlfeil opened a small engine repair shop and hardware store on Walnut Street in Saginaw, Michigan. Pat was known for his strong work ethic and mechanical knowledge, quickly earning the trust of local customers who depended on him to keep their equipment running. His commitment to honest work laid the foundation for what would eventually become Wohlfeil Hardware & Tools.

A few years later, Pat purchased a small storage building on State Street where he continued performing small engine repairs and growing his customer base. Around 1952 or 1953, he then purchased an old fruit market building nearby and expanded the business even further. As business steadily grew, Pat expanded the building and introduced the hardware portion of the store, transforming the business into a place where the community could find both expert repairs and dependable hardware products all under one roof.

Tragically, in 1956, Pat passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind his wife Emma and sons Dave and Ray. In the face of hardship, Emma stepped in and took over the business only weeks after Pat’s passing. Her strength and determination kept the doors open and preserved the family dream during an incredibly difficult time, and she continued to work until her retirement in 1976.

In 1959, after graduating high school at just 18 years old, Dave Wohlfeil stepped into the day-to-day operations of the store. Ray Wohlfeil also spent his high school years working at the store after school, learning the business alongside his family from an early age. After graduating four years later, Ray officially joined Dave in running the day-to-day operations of the business while also serving in the Army Reserves, balancing both responsibilities.

A major milestone came in 1966 when Wohlfeil’s officially became an Ace Hardware store, with Dave and Ray taking ownership. The partnership helped expand the store’s offerings while still maintaining the personalized customer service that had always defined the business.

The 1970s marked a period of growth and expansion. Dave took charge of the showroom and growing power equipment department, while Ray focused on the hardware side of the business. Together, they created a balance that helped Wohlfeil’s become a trusted destination for homeowners, contractors, farmers, and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the region.

One of the biggest challenges in the company’s history came in 1989 when a major building fire temporarily put a dent in the business. For many companies, a setback of that size could have meant the end. But through the strength of the Wohlfeil family, loyal employees, and a community that rallied behind them, the business pushed forward. The team quickly moved parts and service operations into the back warehouse while rebuilding the damaged store. Their determination, resilience, and commitment to their customers allowed Wohlfeil’s not only to recover, but to continue growing stronger than ever.

As the years passed, the next generation of the Wohlfeil family naturally became part of the business. Ray’s children eventually all worked within the company in different capacities. Scott Wohlfeil began working at the store at just 14 years old and would later become the General Manager, overseeing the hardware department while continuing the family’s tradition of hands-on customer service, leadership, and industry knowledge.

Brian Wohlfeil contributed by handling the company’s IT operations for several years before pursuing his own professional career. Lisa Wohlfeil-Seelhoff began working in hardware at the State Street location before Ray opened a second Wohlfeil’s location in Hemlock in 1999. Ray, his wife Sharon, and daughter Lisa worked together to operate the Hemlock store, bringing the Wohlfeil name and reputation to another community.

Another member of the family, Luke Wohlfeil, also worked at the Hemlock location before attending college to pursue a career in engineering. In 2017, the Hemlock store closed due to Ray’s health issues. Although it was a difficult decision for the family, they remained committed to continuing the business and serving the communities that had supported them for generations.

Today, Wohlfeil Hardware & Tools proudly represents three generations actively working together in the family business, with four generations tied to its history. Dave Wohlfeil still oversees the showroom and behind-the-scenes operations, bringing decades of experience and leadership to the company. Scott continues serving as General Manager and overseeing the hardware department, carrying forward the values he learned growing up in the store.

The newest generation has also embraced the family tradition. Scott’s daughter, Jaimee (Wohlfeil) Preston, manages the company’s social media, marketing, advertising, and assists with bookkeeping — helping modernize the business while keeping its small-town identity alive. Scott’s son, Nik Wohlfeil, has contributed across multiple departments, including hardware, sales, plow installation, and repairs, continuing the family’s hands-on approach to serving customers.

While many businesses have come and gone over the decades, Wohlfeil Hardware & Tools has remained a constant through hard work, adaptability, and strong community relationships. From small engine repairs in 1947 to serving generations of loyal customers today, the Wohlfeil family has built more than a business — they have built a legacy.

As Wohlfeil’s continues making history, the family remains grateful to the community that has supported them throughout the years. Their continued success is a testament to the importance of shopping local, supporting family businesses, and trusting neighbors who genuinely care.

From the entire Wohlfeil family: thank you for allowing Wohlfeil Hardware & Tools to be your trusted hardware store for generations.
